Dear JA & Summit families and staff,

Yesterday you may have received a recorded call from Superintendent Dorland regarding district staff reductions due to Jeffco’s budget challenges. This is a very difficult time for our district partners and our hearts go out to those who will be impacted. Please know that district budget reductions will not affect Jefferson Academy Charter School (JACS) staff at any campus. Potential impacts to our schools will be limited to a reduction in services we receive from the district if those services are provided by staff or departments that may experience cuts.

Over the last several years the district has been running deficit budgets, funded by a spend down of their reserves. As a charter school network, JACS handles our budget independent from the district and under the governance of our own Board of Directors. Through conservative budgeting, strategic increases in funding opportunities and a pay down of bond debt, JACS has maintained balanced budgets, set aside 3% of revenue each year to slowly build reserves and increased salaries. At times the Board approved limited expenditures of reserves to fix facility challenges, build the track/grandstand and purchase the church. As a result, JACS remains fiscally sound and on track to fully pay off our bond early, provide future pay increases for staff and to do so without cutting staff or campus budgets.

Thank you for being a valuable part of the school-parent partnership at each of your campuses. As we head into break I want to wish you many fond memories with friends and family.

Thank you,

Tim Matlick
